Pros and Cons of Being a Travel Companion

It’s that time of year when I start planning my travel for the year ahead. I find myself thinking: Which friends would be down for a beach trip? A road trip? An international adventure? And —most importantly — can I spend a whole week sharing a hotel room with my siblings without losing my mind?

To convince my loved ones to travel with me, I like to lead with my best qualities as a travel companion. Here’s my very honest list:

Pros:

Belvedere Palace, Vienna, Austria
  • Always On Time: I’m always 5 minutes early — and if we travel together, you will be too! I’ve never missed a flight, train, bus, or reservation — ever.
  • Itinerary Queen: If we are going somewhere, it’s already in the Google Doc — from reservations to tours and everything in between!
  • Photoshoot Expert: Not to brag, but I take a nice travel photo. Whether it’s scenery or posed shots, I’ll find the light and the best angles!
  • Research Aficionado: Before a trip, I comb through travel sites, TikTok, and Google reviews to find the best spots.
  • Chatty Cathy: I love to chit-chat. Now how is this a bonus? You don’t want to order a meal, I’ve got it. Too shy to ask a stranger for directions? On it. If social interactions stress you out, I’ll handle them — and make sure we never run out of things to talk about.

Cons:

Street Art, Wroclaw, Poland
  • Navigationally Deficient: If I was stranded in a new city, could I get around? Yes. Would I go the wrong way half of the time? Also, yes. Basically, I thrive with a good travel co-pilot.
  • Afflicted with Hanger: If I say I need a snack or a meal, you have 30 minutes to get me fed. I am a great travel companion — when I’m fed. I just don’t want to ruin a trip because I forgot the emergency granola bar back at the hotel.
  • Occasional Motion Sickness: If the plan involves choppy waters, do not sign me up. And if I’m silently meditating in an Uber from the airport, do not put me on a ferry between the Greek islands.

Your turn:

Budapest, Hungary

Try naming your own pros and cons the next time you pitch a weekend to Miami or Vegas. You might be surprised what kind of travel companion you really are — for better or worse.
